NAL Group is currently managing an intellectual property portfolio for its clients that includes over 10,000 trademarks, around 100 patents, plant varieties, and industrial designs. The IP management at NAL began with its first client, Mobinil, and has since registered over 3,000 trademarks in Egypt, Jordan, Gulf countries, Saudi Arabia, the European Union, the United States, China, Russia, Eastern European countries, the UK, Palestine, Libya, Syria, Lebanon, Kenya, Nigeria, South Africa, and others, utilizing local offices and the Madrid System for international trademarks. NAL has also submitted thousands of petitions and oppositions arising from the management of intellectual property rights in Egypt and several other countries. The first year also saw the registration and management of industrial designs for Mienta, followed by Pepsi and Beaty in 2014, then Egypt Foods in 2017, Vodafone Egypt in 2019, as well as several pharmaceutical patents for Merck and AbbVie in 2019, and dozens of plant varieties for Sun World International. Simultaneously, there has been meticulous monitoring of competitors' registration applications to identify and thwart attempts to exploit the fame of the brand.
Since its inception, NAL has been dedicated to protecting the identity and investments of companies by eliminating millions of counterfeit goods in sectors, including food, pharmaceuticals, sports footwear, jewelry, real estate services, mobile accessories, telecommunications, and more. NAL enforced trademark rights, patents, and plant varieties against counterfeit and infringing goods in the markets. Our enforcement work was characterized by many notable achievements, including significant victories for Almarai in 2012, which resulted in the shutdown of the largest frozen meat factory copying Almarai brand. Additionally, the Al Jawhara factory was closed in 2018 for its continuous infringements on the Chipsy brand, and several branches of Damas were shut down in 2021 for riding on the fame of the jewellery leader. NAL successfully halted multiple infringements on the Tiger brand of Egypt Foods and Vodafone trademarks since 2020. Since 2016, we stopped production and caused withdrawal of generic medications from the market infringing on Merck’s patents. We also actively defended breeders’ rights and plant varieties against infringing farms since 2019 for Sunworld International. Our border enforcement team and operations stopped many shipments carrying hundreds of thousands of counterfeit goods since 2022.
NAL Group has been honored to be appointed as the technology contracts advisor for Egyptian banks, particularly in relation to software contracts, electronic payments, and fintech in general. We have also been involved in developing technology contracts for the National Bank of Kuwait since 2013. This trajectory evolved into reviewing licensing contracts for pharmaceutical technology, distribution, and import of medications for Merck since 2015, and for Organon in 2022. Additionally, we handled copyright licensing agreements, content development, and licensing for literary and artistic works for Vodafone in 2019, as well as contracts for developing an electronic content management center for Altera (a subsidiary of the Central Bank) in 2021, and contracts for film production and licensing of novels for Majid Al Futtaim Entertainment in 2022. Since 2013, the value of the contracts NAL has worked on has reached hundreds of millions of US dollars.
